Price: Single $2,265; Couple $1,965/each ($3,930)

August on the water in Maine: This island getaway adventure is a three-night, four-day exploration of Penobscot Bay by kayak as only Down East magazine can arrange. We’ll start with a welcome dinner at 16 Bayview — Camden’s newest luxury hotel that overlooks one of the prettiest harbors in Maine. Then you spend the next three days kayaking around Penobscot Bay with each night in a remote island lodge. Accommodations, meals and all equipment are included. Make new friends and see a side of Maine taken from the pages of Down East magazine. Note: We also offer a women’s only Island Getaway July 24—26.

Tentative Itinerary

Day 1 – August 6

Guests arrive and check into their rooms at 16 Bayview Hotel in the afternoon. Later, join the editors of Down East for a welcome dinner in Camden.

Day 2 – August 7

Start the day with breakfast in Camden, then head to the water in Friendship, where we’ll load the boats and start with some kayak skills instruction. We’ll have lunch in Friendship before paddling to the lodge for dinner and an overnight. This leg of the journey will take us by Friendship Long Island and Cranberry Island, to the southern end of Morse Island and on to Gay Island. Upon arrival we’ll unload the boats and head to the lodge for orientation. The evening brings an oyster tasting and lobster bake.

Day 3 – August 8

Enjoy breakfast at Gay Island Lodge before loading the boats for a paddle to Port Clyde. This leg of the journey takes us by Caldwell and Hupper Islands before heading into Port Clyde Harbor with our lunches packed. Port Clyde is a small traditional Maine fishing community. Once there you can tour the town, visit the lighthouse, and enjoy the scenic surroundings. Then we head back to Gay Island Lodge.

Day 4 – August 9

The final day we’ll have breakfast at the lodge then load up our gear and prepare the kayaks for the paddle back to Friendship. We’ll unload back in Rockport, say our goodbyes, and start making plans for next year!

Please note: Gay Island Lodge is very remote and essentially “off the grid.” Prepare yourself for shared bathrooms and solar-heated showers! Sleeping arrangements include both semi-private and private rooms. Book early for best selection. There are no laundry facilities at the lodge, however your luggage will be transported to the island for you.
