Stay on a secluded island and explore the Maine coast by Kayak in this choose-your-own-level-of-adven
Guests arrive and check into their rooms at 16 Bayview Hotel in the afternoon. Later, join the editors of Down East for a welcome dinner in Camden.
Start the day with breakfast in Camden, then head to Friendship, where we’ll load the boats in the water and start with some kayak skills instruction. We’ll have lunch in Friendship, then paddle to the lodge. This leg of the journey will take us by SW Friendship Long Island and Cranberry Island, to the southern end of Morse Island and on to Gay Island. Upon arrival, we’ll unload the boats and head to the lodge for orientation. The evening brings an oyster and Allagash beer tasting and lobster bake.
Enjoy breakfast at Gay Island Lodge and then get the boats loaded for a paddle to Port Clyde. This leg of the journey takes us from Gay Island Lodge and out by Caldwell and Hupper Islands before heading into Port Clyde Harbor. We’ll have lunches packed to go as we head out to Port Clyde. There, we’ll relax for a bit, taking in the iconic lighthouse and scenic surroundings. The return trip takes us from the Port Clyde ferry terminal, back around Hupper Island to Caldwell, and from there, on to Gay Island Lodge, where we’ll be treated to a delicious dinner catered by a mid-coast restaurant.
The final day we’ll have breakfast at Gay Island Lodge, then load up our gear and prepare the kayaks for the paddle back to Friendship. We’ll unload back at Maine Sport in Rockport, say our good-byes, and start making plans for next year!
Lodging on the island is in a rustic lodge. There is indoor plumbing consisting of 2 and 1/2 baths complete with flush toilets and solar-heated showers. Sleeping arrangements include both semi-private and private rooms. Book early for best selection. There are no laundry facilities at the lodge however, your luggage will be transported to the island for you so you don’t have to be concerned with fitting all your gear into your kayak.
