This getaway island adventure is an exploration of Penobscot Bay by kayak with comfortable overnight stays in two remote inns as only Down East magazine can arrange. Tour secluded islands and explore the Maine coast as you choose your own level of adventure. Accommodations, meals, and all equipment are included. Make new friends and see a side of Maine taken from the pages of Down East magazine. Every skill level is accommodated. Professional guides accompany each group. Note: The July trip is a women-only retreat. We also offer a full group August Maine Island Getaway trip August 6–9.
Start the day in Rockport, then head to Friendship, where we’ll load the boats in the water and start with some kayak skills instruction. We’ll have lunch in Friendship, then paddle to the lodge. This leg of the journey will take us by Friendship Long Island and Cranberry Island to the southern end of Morse Island, then on to Gay Island. Upon arrival, we’ll unload the boats and head to the lodge for orientation. The evening brings an oyster tasting and lobster bake.
Enjoy breakfast at Gay Island Lodge and then paddle to Port Clyde. This leg of the journey takes us out by Caldwell and Hupper Islands before heading into Port Clyde Harbor.
There, walk the iconic town, visit its lighthouse and scenic surroundings. The return trip takes us from the Port Clyde ferry terminal, back around Hupper Island to Caldwell, and back to Gay Island Lodge, where we’ll be treated to a delicious restaurant-catered dinner plus a chocolate tasting from Kate Shaffer of Black Dinah Chocolatiers.
The final day we’ll have breakfast at the lodge, then load up our gear and prepare the kayaks for the paddle back to Friendship. We’ll unload back in Rockport, say our goodbyes, and start making plans for next year!
